One thing that some people have talked about often with the DSi is the web browser that come with the DSi free from the DSi Shop. I think that the DSi’s browser is very solid. You first have to actually download the software, which takes a good two minutes. When you start it up every time, you are greeted with the start screen, which has options where you can type in a URL, select from one of your favorites, or search using either Google or Yahoo. The sad part is it uses the actual search engine, not the mobile version, so the results are all messed up.
I love the two different views. You can either have overview or column mode. Overview mode displays the whole page on the top with an orange rectangle on it, and the orange rectangle is what is displayed on the bottom screen. You can also have it zoomed in so you poke at the spot you want to be on the page and it shows up zoomed in on the top screen.
The column view mode reorganized the contents of the page to fit on both screens vertically so you don’t have to worry about scrolling sideways on the page. This works great on mobile sites like ESPN or Windows Live, but doesn’t work great on sites like the New York Times or IGN, and if there are images bigger than the page it lets you scroll horizontally which kind of takes away the whole point of the column mode totally.
The browser also keeps your history which is nice, because you can only hit the back button a few times, so you need to get to it to be able to go back a few pages if you clicked on a lot of links. I also like the favorites which do… what you expect them to do.
Overall the DSi web browser is a must download for any DSi owner if you haven’t realized that already, because you can get it for a total price of $0. It’s a good download that is worth more than it costs. I use it every day, but just for looking at baseball scores or things like that. It is no supercomputer for speed.
